Barcelona betting form
In overcoming PSG in the Champions League quarterfinals recently, Barcelona became the first team to reach six successive semi-finals of the competition. They may have been the proud owners of the collective dubbed the ‘Dream Team’ in the early 90s, but this generation at Camp Nou has turned out to be something else.
Since Josep Guardiola was handed the reigns in the summer of 2008, betting on La Blaugrana to win silverware has become almost redundant. Betting odds for Barcelona never represent a great return due to their dominance in recent years, 2013 looks all but certain to bring them their fifth La Liga title and they’re still in the running to clinch their third Champions League trophy within the same period.
It’s in Europe where they’ve looked most culpable in 2012/13 though, and where first signs of weakness in this talented crop of La Masia graduates have been demonstrated. Heavily backed to win in Milan at the start of the knockout phases, they were beaten 2-0 and all the people betting on them were dealt a massive shock. They made up against it in the return leg though, overturning the defeat to advance 4-2 on aggregate and rewarding all the people who had backed them in the competition when their betting odds had slightly lengthened.
Barcelona Betting Markets
Barcelona betting against PSG proved difficult too – they failed to register a win over the two legs, advancing on away goals after two draws. Against Bayern Munich in the semi-final they’re favourites to progress over the two legs, and betting markets have them as joint favourites for the competition with Real Madrid.
Away from the obvious competition outright markets, betting on Barcelona can be fun. Betting markets such as +2.5 of +3.5 goals are often rewarded when Barca play; they score a lot of goals and, this season, haven’t been averse to conceding a few either. At the time of writing only 5/23 of their matches in 2013 have failed to produce over 2.5 goals, none have failed in the +1.5 betting market.
Such short odds make it hard to see value in betting on Barcelona when it comes to backing them to win competitions outright, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look elsewhere to find some fun betting markets to take advantage of Barcelona’s goalscoring prowess – with magicians like Lionel Messi, they’re always going to score a few.
