The Epsom Derby is an annual horse racing event that starts on Friday 2nd June until Saturday 3rd June 2017, which includes 7 races a day – making a total of 14 racing events to be covered. Right at the last minute, two horses were added to this auspicious event at a cost of £85,000 each – Permian, the successor in the Dante Stakes at York and Khalidi, last week’s winner at Goodwood, making the total purse for the classic a staggering £1.625million. To add more excitement to what already is the most anticipated horse racing event of the summer, trainer John Jenkins has thrown in outsider Diore Lia – the 1,000/1 shot, which has drawn criticism far and wide, but he has defended his owner’s decision to enter the outsider who will be ridden by Gina Mangan – the apprentice jockey.
Diore Lia has only ever made 2 competitive appearances, but the owner Richard Aylward is keen for his filly to take to the field to generate publicity and funds for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. John Jenkins stated;
“If I didn’t run her, someone else would. The owner is keen to run her and has set up a charity. He’s there for the big day. I had a runner in the Derby a long time ago. That was an outsider as well and it didn’t finish last. Has there ever been a 1,000/1 winner of the Derby?”
