Huddersfield Giants kicked off their Super League campaign with a 24-8 win over 2013 champions Wigan Warriors and the other 12 teams will all get their 2014 campaigns started over the course of this weekend.
Warrington Wolves v St. Helens Betting Tips
The first action this weekend actually takes place on Thursday night as last year’s losing finalists Warrington host St. Helens in a local derby match.
The Wolves could hand a debut former New Zealand captain Roy Asotasi who joined over the close season as could other recent acquisitions Anthony England, Luke Walsh and Kyle Amor. However Samoan prop Mose Masoe will have to wait for his Warrington debut due to an ankle injury.
St. Helens had a poor season by their standards last year, with a mid-season injury crisis seeing them only secure fifth place at the end of the regular league season, so they’ll be looking to get this campaign off to the best possible start.
Catch this match live on Sky Sports 1 from 8pm.
Hull FC v Catalan Dragons Betting Tips
Then on Friday evening last season’s Challenge Cup runners-up Hull FC take on French side Catalan Dragons. Coach Lee Radford will coach the hosts for the first time after he replaced Peter Gentle in the close season.
He includes new signings Mickey Paea, Feka Paleaaesina, Jordan Rankin, Fetuli Talanoa and Jordan Thompson who are all set to make their debuts for the East Yorkshire club. Prop Garreth Carvell is also likely to feature after returning from a spell at Bradford Bulls.
Catalan look set to hand Jeff Lima, Michael Oldfield and Ben Pomeroy their debuts during the opening match of the season.
Hull took a 14-4 win when the sides last met in a play-off eliminator last season and home advantage means they’re 2/5 favourites with Bet 365. The best value on a Catalan win is provided by Betfred at 9/4.
This game is live on Friday evening from 8pm on Sky Sports 1.
Sunday Super League Betting Tips
The other four matches this weekend take place at 3pm on Sunday and Salford start their new chapter as the ‘Salford Red Devils’ at home to Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
Salford have spent the close-season busy recruiting following their buy-out by businessman Marwan Koukash towards the start of last season including the likes of Rangi Chasde, Gareth Hock and Adrian Morley and should be a much stronger proposition this season.
Elsewhere, Hull KR take on Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls host Castleford Tigers and London Widnes Vikings face London Broncos.
